Wild horses are common in parts of Utah, particularly the western part of the state. In the Skull Valley, the Onaqui herd is one of the most impressive herds of wild horses I’ve seen. When I last visited I encountered more than a hundred horses roaming free in the valley. While watching, it was easy to discern obvious rivalries and alliances. In this image, two stallions challenge one another in front of the herd. The battles can be quite fierce, as evidenced by the abundant scars on the proud stallions.
